Edinburgh has more traditional country pubs and swanky gastropubs per capita than most cities in Europe, so finding a decent Sunday Roast is just an issue of whittling it down.

We’ve finessed our round-up so only the absolute essentials feature, including Chop House’s THREE venues across the city, Cucina’s mouth-watering Sunday Lunch buffet and everyone’s favourite meat-peddlers, Hawksmoor. Read on to see who made it to the list….

End the week in style at Hawksmoor Edinburgh, a sophisticated steak restaurant with a stunning Sunday Roast. They’ve honed it to perfection, part-cooking it over charcoal and served with all the trimmings – duck fat roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, carrots, greens, roasted shallots & garlic and lashings of bone barrow and onion gravy. Try to save room for dessert though, as the chocolate cascade and ice cream cart are an absolute must for dessert-lovers.

Get friends and family together as this one’s a gut-busting feast with beef carved tableside and huge platters of sides, available at just £100 for 4 adults or £160 for 6.

In Edinburgh’s buzzing West End, The Pompadour is the elegant, fine-dining alternative to enjoy a special Sunday Lunch. It’s an art deco space, reminiscent of an old dining carriage with dashes of electric blue furniture for a modern feel. The mouth-watering Sunday Roast menu is presided over by chef Dan Ashmore and for just £34.50, guests can enjoy three courses of inventive reworkings of classic British fare.

Chez Mal is found inside boutique hotel Malmaison in Edinburgh, a modern French brasserie with a vibrant British twist on Sunday Lunches. Traditional roasts of grain-fed beef and pork belly with apple puree are your best bet, both of which come with rosemary & thyme Yorkshire puds and all the good stuff. Its prime Leith Shore location will find you not far from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, though Chez Mal boasts the ambient atmosphere of a little-known hideaway with lovely views of the harbour.

Not strictly a Sunday Roast joint but if you fancy going the non-traditional route, Gaucho supply meat-and-two-veg with an Argentinian twist - as purveyors of the finest cuts, you know you’re in good hands. We recommend trying a tender sirloin with crackling or a Latin American staple, the Iberico pork served with apple and a Malbec mustard kohlrabi. Told you it was non-traditional!

This is a group deal so make sure to specify guest numbers when booking! Min. 9 people.

A shared venture between three friends, The Ox is a welcoming gastropub found in the thriving food scene along Broughton Street. Expect traditional British pub classics and hearty roasts: slow roast pork belly with pork gravy is a favourite, as is the fillet of trout with jersey royals and shrimp. You may want to split some small plates to start though, as the Shetland mussels and duck leg scrumpets are some of the best Scottish nibbles in Edinburgh.
